Guitar Website Takes the Mystery Out of Music Theory
Sylvania, OH (PRWEB) February 28, 2011 Guitar theory professional, Desi Serna, understands why so numerous guitarists have a tough time grasping musical concepts and applying them to their playing. Early on, Serna also struggled to make those connections, even following taking music theory classes and studying how to read regular musical notation. But when he thought he had given up on solving the difficulty he realized that he had actually found the remedy to it. “The fretboard is a grid. No matter how a musical idea looks in writing, on the guitar it ultimately becomes a shape or pattern.” Serna continues, “The dilemma with the classic strategy of studying music theory is that it focuses on the staff and instruments like the piano. My lessons focus specifically on the guitarist’s distinctive perspective and how musical elements look on the guitar neck.” Often this indicates that Serna leaves out material that just isn’t relevant or useful to guitar players. “It is effortless to get your mind so cluttered with superfluous information that you do not know exactly where to begin or what to play.” Apparently Serna?s strategy genuinely strikes a chord with a lot of guitar players, seeing how [...]

Could we change our MUSIC THEORY system?
By Groovy Giraffe Wheels : Could we alter our MUSIC THEORY system? In “music theory” we have a globally accepted program which describes musical notes utilizing the following names: A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G#… then back to A etc… Why is it like this???? I know if you are in the key of C on piano it occurs to conveniently make sense because E to F and B to C are both just half steps… which corresponds to how the significant scale utilizes the Whole Complete Half Whole Whole Complete Half pattern. Nevertheless, any time you are NOT in the key of C and making use of a piano the E to F and B to C concept does not correspond to where the half actions occur. So it’s silly that we have that rule where there are no E# (or Fb), B# (Cb), notes that exist. Still I have to use this method every day as a musician. Is there a more sensible and effective way??? For example, why couldn’t we just not use sharps and flats at all… we could use the following note naming program rather: A B C D [...]

Could we have a better MUSIC THEORY note naming system?
By Groovy Giraffe Wheels : Could we have a better MUSIC THEORY note naming system? In “music theory” we have a globally accepted system which describes musical notes using the following names: A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G#… then back to A etc… Must it be like this???? Here are some points: I know if you’re in the key of C on piano it happens to conveniently make sense to have this system of note names because since E to F and B to C are both just half steps… which corresponds to how the white keys are all the ones being played using a major scale (using the Whole Whole Half Whole WHole Whole Half pattern). However, any time you’re NOT in the key of C and using a piano the E to F and B to C idea doesn’t correspond to where the half steps occur so conveniently… instead, you’ll have to play the half steps of that major scale using black keys and white keys etc. So it’s a convenient system only when you’re in the key of “C”. I find it a little silly that we have that rule where [...]
When is music theory taught where you live, and do you think it should play a bigger role?
By Kalibasa : When is music theory taught where you live, and do you think it should play a bigger role? When I was growing up “music theory” just meant the annoying books and exercises my piano teachers periodically made me do. I hated it, and I never remembered any of it- I must have learned and forgotten the circle of fifths twenty times! Between all my years in piano and all my years in summer camps and youth orchestras, I got a pretty good idea of what most music students learned, and music theory was certainly not high on the list. In the US, at least, it seems that most people only learn it in college, if they become music majors. That is when I took it, and even if the first year dragged a little (“parallel fifths” haunted me in my sleep!), by the second year I fell in love with it. Then everything just came together- we learned chord progressions and resolutions, and then modulations and chromaticism and augmented sixths, and by the end of it I realized I could actually compose. What I had thought would just be a chore turned into one of the most [...]
